Takes on Groom Cakes

Cutting In To The Groom Cake

The groom cake.

They always prove to give the guests something to talk about. If you have been to a wedding with a grooms cake, you most assured will remember it. The armadillo cake made of red velvet was a famous grooms cake from the movie Steel Magnolias.

A groom cake allows the groom to have an item to express himself to the guests. It can reflect his favorite hobby or occupation. There are no hard rules of etiquette written on this tradition.

Want to learn more about the traditions of groom cakes? Stay tuned for future posts on the history of this fun tradition as well as some of ideas and photos to inspire you for your groom cake.

Something Old, Something New, Something...Personal

Written by Brandi Klingerman

Every bride wants her wedding to stand apart from all the others. But how? My cousin, now Halee Williams, recently got married and she really knew how to tie in personal elements from her and her husband’s relationship and her family traditions to make the wedding memorable.

From dining at the rehearsal dinner to dancing at the reception there was a little touch of Halee and Frank everywhere. Halee took advantage of a favorite dessert she and Frank have always loved: Chocolate Eruption Cake from Beef O’Brady’s. The cake is delicious and at the rehearsal dinner Halee and Frank had a slice served to each member of the wedding party. They even explained what the cake meant to them.
These small elements make the day all the more fun for the guests and all the more special for the bride. It takes all the special moments of the bride and groom together for the guests to see. Adding personal touches can enhance the entire experience for everyone at the wedding, the bride, the groom and the guests.

We've got some ideas for you to inspire and encourage you to add some personal touches for your upcoming wedding.

The Groom Cake

Boxed slices of a groom's cake can be used as a wedding favor for your guests. If you do this, make sure that the box has a little something extra. Decorate the box to match a moment of you and your new husband.

More about adding personal touches will be on the way as the next article will be about how to influence your other parts of your wedding personal to you. Also a new article all about the history and the tradition of just what exactly a groom cake is and what it can be for you.

Launch Party of TreatsBridalSuite: A Sneak Peek

On March 11th, the iHEART headquarters and The Midas Center hosted a Grand Opening and Launch party for the Treat's Bridal Suite. Treats Bridal Suite is scheduled to go live on March 31st. Guests were welcomed to get a preview of the suite members and to join in on the fun and celebrations.

Setting the Tone, beautiful harp music by Beth Paré, enchanted the guests as they entered, passing the staging area nested in the corner window of the historic building located in downtown Plymouth's historic Main Street of Michigan- and Garro Street.

Local cake designer Alexis Davis, owner of Cakewalk presented her debut of the new delicious dessert item, Cakewalk Cake Truffles, allowing a special tasting experience by brides and guests.

Elegance and class were shown brightly and colorfully by the Treat's Bridal Shoppe products and gowns showcased from the loft area of the event space. Treat's Bridal Shoppe also awarded a $100 gift certificate to the first recipient of one of the many prizes given away to guests.

That lucky guest who received the gift certificate had to work for it. Mayor Mark Senter set the launch party in motion, staying with the bridal theme and tossing a garter to a group of guests. Katie Ortiz, the catcher of the garter is not a bride-to-be but is slated to be a bridesmaid as well as the mother of the flower girl in her sister's-in-law wedding next spring.

A unique activity for guests included a special photo booth provided by the talented Photography by Jayme. Jayme is credited to many of the photos in this review as well as some Facebook tagged photo taken from the photo booth during the event guaranteed to make you smile. Check her page out on Facebook and click through the fun and crazy props the guests were tagged in from this event.

The event's glow grew from the golden food popped from the vintage popcorn machine provided by Dan Barden's Grand Rental Station along with a fully staged table demonstrating the elegant place setting, all items and more are available for weddings or any special event. The table was complemented by an inspiring floral centerpiece by Elizabeth's Garden.

The Midas Center's office was spectacularly decorated with flower arrangements special props by "I DO" Venues. Another special touch was a gorgeous Japanese Red Emperor Maple tree by Price's Nurseries. Price Nurseries presented their new product line, Celebration Trees, a fabulous gift idea for the new bride and groom. It is like a ring that keeps growing rings with every anniversary!

Food was generously offered by Anthony Gamble, owner of Mancino's Pizza and Grinders. Anthony Gamble is also one of three Plymouth mayor candidates running for the coveted office in the upcoming election. In fact, all three mayoral candidates celebrated The Midas Center and iHEART Green Media's Grand Opening in the newly renovated historical building with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Mayor Mark Senter. See picture. From left to right are Dan Barden, Gary Treat, Anthony Gamble, Mark Senter, Jim Vinal and Andrea Cook.

Other businesses debuting in the upcoming launch of the Treats Bridal Suite were available during the party to showcase their special products and services including Bowen PrintingHammer Dulcimer player Marcy Prochaska, club members of Toastmasters, and dance instructors from Life Plex Dance Academy. These value-added suite members and event participants provided a one-stop shop and opportunity to the brides and other guests for successful performances during the wedding event including support for mastering the toast and ballroom and wedding dance services. The Midas Center hosted the event and provided refreshing golden punch for all the guests.

Many brides and their fiancés, bridesmaids, friends and moms came out to discover this great event-planning event and to meet the wonderful bridal vendors of Treats Bridal Suite. TreatsBridalSuite.com will make its debut on March 31st. This online resource will provide brides with a collection of local bridal businesses all located within one digital magazine-like directory. Creator, Andrea Cook recognized all of the top class wedding businesses in the area and pitched the concept to Gary Treat, owner of Treat's Bridal Shoppe in January. She hopes "this resource will position our community as the next bridal destination. From the outcome of Friday's Launch Party, we're on our way!"

Gobs of gifts and prizes were contributed by suite members and iHEART sponsors and will be given away throughout the month to registered guests of the event and Treats Bridal Suite Facebook fans. Stay tuned to Treat's Bridal Suite to see the great products and services that the Treats Bridal Suite members have been giving away, as well as the announcements of the lucky brides and registered guests who will win the prizes!

Buzz Blog: A Tad of Wedding Obsession

That was then: White Weddings. This is now: Weddings of Color.

When you think of weddings, what comes to mind? The simplicity of the elegant white gown, or the groomsmen standing at the altar in their classic black tuxedos?

For most people, they envision the traditional standard of what weddings should be. However, today's brides are welcoming in a touch of somethings out of the ordinary. Color is officially making its comeback and the ol' vanilla cookie cutter weddings of white only are no more.

The latest trends are showing brides saying "I do" to colorful gowns, bright shoes, and eye catching bouquets. The new touch of color is fun and allows the new couple to tell a story. Adding splashes of color to the traditional black and white wedding day gives the bride, bridesmaids and everyone poised along the alter a chance to shine in their own way.

Two Cent Offering:
Take time to orchestrate every detail of your special day to represent who you are. Bouquets and accessories don't have to be boring. Go bold. Instead of the classic all white bouquet and purse, choose smaller, colorful clutches with a vibrant rich bouquet of your favorite flowers and add feathers! The best thing about making your wedding unique and truly colorful is that the most original wedding will also be the most memorable. Everything you choose will set the style and tone of your entire event and while this might be a tricky task to complete, it will result in a day that is unlike any other for the bride and groom and the guests.

Traditional isn't a must when chic modern could be yours on your wedding day! Give your guests something to talk about and add color and flair. Remember, it's your wedding, color it if you wanna!

Thanks for letting us share a tad of our wedding obsession with you.

A Wedding Story

Experiencing your wedding day marks the beginning of matrimony and for Lindsey Cox, it also marked the beginning chapter of her career. Every second of the wedding planning was a thrill for Cox and so once she and her newlywed husband returned from her honeymoon, she co-founded "I DO" Venues. Together with her cousin Ashley Good, Cox hopes to grow this wedding business start-up into a blissful story of "happily-ever-after." This beautiful story of entrepreneurship started first with the kiss at the alter.

Once upon a time... a girl name Lindsey and her sweetheart both attended LaVille High School. Their courtship started to grow and remained steady through college life, when the groom attended Ancilla College and played baseball. Later, both went to Indiana University of South Bend. Boyfriend Darin Cox proposed on New Year's Eve of 2009 in Newton Park on the baseball field, the eve to a new year and new era for the couple.

The bride-to-be started the wedding planning at Treat's Bridal Shoppe, where she bought the one and only dress she tried on. In addition to her wedding gown, Lindsey also purchased the bridesmaids gowns, the tuxedos, the garters (one to toss and one to keep), the flukes and the shoes from Treat's Bridal Shoppe.

Lindsey was married on March 2nd of 2010 at the Church of the Brethren. The bride is a member of the Cornerstone Church in Lapaz but at the time, it was under construction. The Church of the Brethren kindly allowed Lindsey's current spouse's uncle to perform the ceremony. The wedding music was non-traditional and the bride walked down the aisle to "Your Hand in Mine" by Explosions in the Sky. Also during the ceremony two soloists performed "Born Again" by Third Day.

The couple had three little cousins attend as junior bridesmaids and a groomsman. The cousins made some commotion throughout the ceremony but everyone laughed it off and cherished the family memories at the alter. The Officiator was not just uncle to the groom he also was the father to one of the young junior bridesmaids. Just as he was closing the ceremony, he asked the bride and groom to turn to face the guests as if he was about to conclude the ceremony. He then abruptly turned to his nine year old daughter and asked her if she had anything to say. The junior bridesmaid, with a smile that lit up the room proudly said, "Darin, you may kiss the bride." The entire church was filled with a warm laughter and cheer as the bride and groom kissed and walked out down the aisle to James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is." The couple has spent their first year hand-in-hand in bliss.

Husband Darin supports the new venture of I DO Venues that Lindsay and Ashley are launching this year. For more information on the services of this wedding business, visit I DO Venues online >
